Most organizations conduct board orientation periodically. The audience, delivery, content, and frequency are vast. There are differences in whether the process is exclusively for new leaders or should include the entire board.
Identifying a new board member is only the first step in what you hope will be a mutually rewarding relationship. Whether the orientation of your new board member is approached informally or formally, be sure to include the basics needed for new board members to become engaged in the work of the board right away and to serve as a committed ambassador and advocate for your nonprofit’s mission for a long time to come.

Developing and conducting an organizational recruitment campaign is very important. Yet, as we all know, retaining these new members is entirely another matter. Too frequently, groups skip any form of orientation and place their new members directly on committees or organizational projects. Although involvement is crucial to the group’s longevity, understanding the organization and its goals, objectives, structure, norms, and taboos is equally as important. By taking the time to orient new members to the privileges and responsibilities of membership, you create a more educated membership and a more productive organization - people who can and will make significant contributions to the organization.
