In the United States, more than 1.2 million families of all income levels live in homes owned and operated through cooperative associations. Housing co-ops are not a new concept. The first housing cooperative in the nation was organized in New York City in the late 1800’s. Today, large numbers of housing co-ops are located in major urban areas such as Atlanta, Boston, Chicago, Detroit, Miami, Minneapolis, New York City, San Francisco, Seattle and Washington, DC.

The guide contains information on whether or not a group should conduct a feasibility study, the steps involved, how to evaluate a study, and how to implement one once completed. Tips on selecting and working with consultants are also provided.

UHAB has spent most of 2020 working to support HDFCs through this di†cult time and organizing for a more just world. Throughout the year, we have published reports tracking COVID-19’s impact on the HDFC community and our programs. In this report, we reflect on the current reality and tackle some of the broader themes of our work. Every October as we celebrate Co-op Month, we have a chance to reflect on the co-op model as a means for democratic control. While this Co-op Month looked dierent from those prior, it provided us with an opportunity to explore our work through a more critical lens.

The interviews were conducted remotely. The findings include accounts from cooperatives and producer organizations, which focus primarily on coffee production, in addition to reports from a privately owned coffee production enterprise and a cooperative member. The Vulnerability Context and Asset Pentagon, components of the Sustainable Rural Livelihoods Framework as described by the Department for International Development, were used to analyze the data, along with variables to assess organizational resilience

This report describes and quantifies the magnitude of economic activity accounted for by U.S. cooperative businesses. It describes the legal and economic characteristics that were used to define cooperative firms; methods used to measure cooperative activity across all sectors of the US economy; and approaches developed to collect appropriate data. Finally, it provides a census of cooperatives, summarizes the extent of their activity by economic sector, and measures their impact on aggregate income and employment

This guide elaborates on the fourth of the 12- step event sequence: conduct a feasibility study. A feasibility study is an integral part of cooperative business development. Conducting a feasibility study is not a theoretical research project, but rather is a focused study for a specific group that wants to explore forming a cooperative business.
